Patriots officially sign first-round draft pick to rookie contract

· · 1 min read

New England Patriots offensive tackle Caleb Lomu has officially signed his rookie contract with the team.

The team announced the news on social media on Monday. Lomu was one of only two rookies who had yet to sign their new deals. The last remaining rookie without a contract is edge rusher Gabe Jacas, a second-round draft pick out of Illinois.

Lomu was selected in the first round by the Patriots, who traded up from No. 31 overall to No. 28 to take the promising swing tackle out of Utah. On the surface, he seems to be the clear future replacement for aging right tackle Morgan Moses.

But given his experience on the left side, he might also provide serious competition for Will Campbell, the 2025 first-round draft pick who struggled at left tackle last postseason.

All eyes will be on Lomu in training camp to see where he ends up on the offensive line. Will he simply serve as a depth piece behind Campbell and Moses in his first season? Perhaps the goal really is to have him learn behind Moses short-term before eventually passing him on the depth chart.

Or, maybe it’s much bigger than both of those things. Perhaps Lomu is legitimate competition for Will Campbell in only his second NFL season.
