Parker Washington Wants New Deal Done, But Jaguars Aren’t in a Rush. Here’s Why

Parker Washington has emerged as an important piece of the Jacksonville Jaguars offense entering the 2026 season. Now, the Jaguars face a decision over how quickly they will reward that growth. The wide receiver enters the final year of his rookie contract after a breakout 2025 campaign. Last season, he led the team with 58 receptions for 847 yards and five receiving touchdowns.

The Jaguars have already opened discussions with Washington about a potential extension. However, the franchise is seemingly not in a hurry. Instead, they won’t mind allowing those negotiations to continue into the regular season. Unsurprisingly, Washington would rather ascertain the state of things before the stakes increase.

Jacksonville Sees Washington as a Valuable Offensive Piece

Washington clearly doesn’t want to bear the burden of contemplating his future while fielding on the side’s offense. However, his employers appear not as concerned about closing in on an instant agreement. ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler opens up on the development in a recent report.

From the franchise’s perspective, not rushing the process gives them more time to evaluate Washington’s value. On the player’s part, it allows the receiver to build on a season that significantly changed his standing within the offense.

Washington entered the league as a sixth-round selection in 2023 after Jacksonville selected him 185th overall out of Penn State. His first two seasons produced modest numbers, catching 16 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie year. The next season saw him register 32 receptions for 390 yards and three touchdowns in 2024.

Then came a bolder step in 2025 when Washington played all 16 regular-season games and finished with 58 receptions for 847 yards. The 24-year-old also averaged 14.6 yards per reception and scored five touchdowns last year. Even more, the season saw him register two punts for touchdowns, becoming the first player in franchise history with multiple punt-return touchdowns in one season.

That’s not all. Washington became a more consistent part of Trevor Lawrence’s passing game. His breakout year saw him grow into one of the franchise’s most dependable offensive options. By all standards, the timing of Washington’s emergence matters because it helped him to build a deeper receiving group around Lawrence.

In the meantime, the Jaguars can afford to wait because the player’s current contract still covers the 2026 season. They can also gather more information about his role before committing significant long-term money.

Yet, Washington’s hopes remain unresolved week after week until a new contract in the 2026 season. A strong 2026 season could increase his asking price. Conversely, injuries or reduced production could complicate his negotiating position. The complex situation creates a natural incentive for Washington to secure an extension now.
