Last week’s preseason debut for Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Bryce Young was a bit of a failure to launch. Young was on the field for three drives against the Buffalo Bills—all of which, thanks to a constantly-collapsing pocket, ended in three-and-outs.
Tonight’s outing against the Jacksonville Jaguars, however, was different.
Despite not getting solid pass protection once again, Young looked confident and aggressive, and extended plays for positive gains several times.
Young’s first drive of the game started promisingly enough. On first down, Young rolled out and found a pass rusher bearing down on him. Young didn’t panic, instead side-stepping the pass rusher with a hesitation move, then delivering a strike to Tommy Tremble for a 5-yard gain.
After a pass interference penalty against wideout Tetairoa McMillan, the Panthers found themselves at midfield—but that’s as far as they got. Like last week, Carolina’s run blocking completely broke down at the line of scrimmage and Young soon found himself in third-and-long and facing pressure again. He had to throw it away to avoid taking a sack to end his first possession.
Young came out firing on his second drive, moving his feet in the pocket well to avoid pressures and making the right decisions to move the chains. He completed nice gains to Tremble and wide receiver Jalen Coker and a couple to McMillan on the way to the goal line. Then, the Panthers punched it in on a 1-yard run by Jonathon Brooks.

That was it for Young for the evening, as he was replaced by backup Kenny Pickett on Carolina’s third drive. He finished having completed five of his six throws for 49 yards and a 100.7 passer rating.
We’re not in the habit of handing out grades for preseason performances, especially against second-string defenses. But if we had to, Young would get an “A” for his brief bit of action on Friday.
