Crystal Palace have announced the signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu after a successful trial period.

The 27-year-old took part in Palace’s pre-season camp following his World Cup campaign with Japan, but has now joined on a permanent basis as a free transfer.

The Eagles have not confirmed the length of Tomiyasu’s contract, though he becomes manager Pierre Sage’s second signing after Oscar Mingueza.

The former Arsenal defender, who can play across the backline, spent the second half of the 2025-26 season with Ajax as he recovered from his previous injury problems, but he is now back in the Premier League.

“I’m excited to get started,” Tomiyasu told the club website.

“This club is in a good moment, winning three titles in two seasons. Here is where I wanted to be.”

Tomiyasu made 84 appearances for Arsenal after joining in 2021, though played just one match in his final season due to injury.

During his first three campaigns with the Gunners, which were also affected by injury, Tomiyasu recorded the third-most interceptions (56) among Arsenal defenders in the Premier League and won the fourth-most duels (211).

Overall, he scored two goals and provided six assists for Mikel Arteta’s side, while also making six appearances in the Champions League and eight in the Europa League, which Palace will take part in this season.

Tomiyasu could make his competitive debut for the Eagles when they face Everton in the Premier League on August 22.
