The San Diego Padres leave Philadelphia knowing the Phillies have their number, sweeping them for the second time in 10 days. The Phillies’ six-game season sweep of the Padres is the second time the Phillies have swept the Friars in a six-game season series, doing so in 2005 (July 22-25 and August 12-14).
The loss against the Phillies is the latest in the Padres woes, as they have won one game in their last 10 and have been outscored 45-26 in that span. As frustrations began to mount, third baseman Manny Machado didn’t mince his words when talking about how bad the Padres are.

“People are frustrated,” Machado told MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell. “The fans want us to win games. So do we. We’re more frustrated than anybody. We want to turn things around. Everybody on this ballclub is trying to do that. So we’re going to keep working, just know that we’re still in a good position, even though we’re playing like [expletive].
“But things will turn around. It’s a long season. There’s still a lot of baseball to be played. This group in here knows it. All we can do is keep working. Things will change.”

The Padres are the worst team in Major League Baseball in scoring runs (235), getting on base (.291) and only the New York Mets are worse at slugging the baseball (.359), with the Padres one point ahead (.360).
Machado hasn’t helped the Padres during their struggles, as the seven-time All-Star has been ice-cold. In the 15 games, Machado is batting .148 with 18 strikeouts in 54 at-bats, but has five home runs for a .444 slugging percentage.
Machado did offer a positive message in all the bitterness: “I don’t think it can get worse,” said a sullen Manny Machado from the visiting clubhouse in Philadelphia. “I mean, there’s only one way: Up.”
The Padres begin a three-game series with the Mets on Friday, who have played .500 baseball in their last 10 games. Facing the worst team in the National League East (27-35), this series could get the Padres back on track.
