Packers rookie CB Brandon Cisse will practice and other injury updates

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers won’t have to worry about rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse missing any time.

Cisse, who injured his knee while covering a punt in the 33-13 exhibition victory over the Denver Broncos on Aug. 21 and did not return to the game, will practice in pads Aug. 24, according to coach Matt LaFleur.

The Packers were not overly concerned about Cisse after examining him on the sideline, and the fact he didn’t need to go to the locker room to be looked at further suggested the injury wasn’t serious. But there was the chance the injury would cause him to miss a day or two of practice.

Cisse will receive valuable work this week when the Arizona Cardinals visit for a joint practice Aug. 26.

Here are updates on some other injured players:

Brinson injured his calf before the Broncos game and did not play.

“It happened in warm-ups,” LaFleur said. “He felt a little tweak in his calf, and so he’ll miss a little bit of time.”

Brinson is in line to be a starter in Week 1, so it’s unlikely the Packers will rush him back. Besides, rookie Chris McClellan has been playing so well the coaches will want to see more of him, especially with the joint practice coming up.

“I thought he flashed,” LaFleur said. “I thought he did a lot of great things. I think just playing with the play style that we’re looking for. He showed some good burst getting after the quarterback. There was a play where he got out of the stack and almost took out (cornerback) Jayden Simpson.

“But I just like the effort running to the football. But there’s certainly a lot of things that he can improve upon as well, and we’ll get him coached up on those. And but I do think he’s a really good, young, talented player.”

LaFleur said Banks did not suffer a setback in practice last week when he pulled himself out of a team drill.

Banks practiced for the first time in full-pad 11-on-11 drills after being limited to individual drills only while treating tendinitis in his knee. Banks did not play in either of the two exhibition games, but LaFleur said he was hopeful Banks would be ready for Week 1.

“I think he’s made good progress,” LaFleur said. “Ultimately, he’s got to continue to put those days back-to-back-to-back. I think he’s definitely getting better. He’s trending in the right direction.

The rookie suffered a concussion against the Broncos and was put into the league’s concussion protocol, which means he has to be cleared by an independent neurologist before being allowed back on the field.

“He is still working through that right now,” LaFleur said.

LaFleur said Jacobs, who returned from a groin injury last week and was doing only individual drills, will start to work in some 11-on-11s.

“He’ll be limited in all team periods, but he’ll be out there practicing,” LaFleur said.

LaFleur did not say whether he expected Jacobs to take part in the joint practice.

It doesn’t appear Orzech, who is on the physically unable to perform list with a calf injury, will be ready for the joint practice.

“I think he’s getting closer to say that he’ll be back this week,” LaFleur said. “I think it might be too soon to say, but I know he’s getting close.”
