Packers make roster move to start final week of offseason workout program

The Green Bay Packers kicked off the final week of the offseason workout program with a roster move on Monday, signing a tight end they attempted to acquire in May and releasing a wide receiver who started the 2025 regular season finale in Minnesota.

The Packers announced the signing of tight end Luke Lachey and the release of wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James.

While the Packers sent home the veterans after mandatory minicamp to end last week, the rookies are hanging around an extra week and will be participating during the final two sessions of OTAs this week. By Thursday, the offseason program will be finished and players won’t be back in Green Bay officially until late July.

First, a roster move on Monday.

The Packers originally claimed Lachey, a 2025 draft pick of the Houston Texans, in May. But he failed his physical and wasn’t added to the roster. Still unsigned come mid-June, Lachey has now passed a physical and is joining the Packers’ 91-player offseason roster.

The Packers were thin at tight end, and Lachey gives the position a traditional “Y” type to begin developing behind Tucker Kraft.

To clear a roster spot, the Packers released Keeney-James, who signed to the team’s practice squad in September of last year and was actually a starter at wide receiver against the Vikings in Week 18. He caught two passes for 15 yards and returned two kickoffs for 47 yards while playing 94 percent of the offense’s total snaps.

Lachey (6-6, 251) was a seventh-round pick (No. 255 overall) of the Houston Texans in the 2025 NFL draft. He was waived at final roster cutdowns last August and spent his entire rookie season on the Texans practice squad.
