Only two players remain from Patriots 2024 draft, after latest release

Another one bit the dust for the New England Patriots’ 2024 NFL Draft class on Monday.

Guard Caedan Wallace, a former offensive tackle and third-round pick from Penn State, was reportedly released by the Patriots after only two seasons with the team. Wallace’s exit now leaves quarterback Drake Maye and cornerback Marcellas Dial Jr. as the last remaining Patriots players from the 2024 draft class.

It was a transitional year for the Patriots with Jerod Mayo taking over as a first-time head coach and Eliot Wolf calling the shots as the lead personnel executive. The team knocked the Maye draft pick out of the park, even though it was the consensus no-brainer pick.

Dial has carved out a special teams role on the team, which has enabled him to stick around after Mike Vrabel took over as the head coach.

But the rest of the draft class wasn’t so lucky with Wallace, Ja’Lynn Polk, Javon Baker, Layden Robinson and Jaheim Bell all being released. Quarterback Joe Milton III was traded to the Dallas Cowboys last offseason.

Perhaps the players go on to have successful careers elsewhere, but for the Patriots, it was one of the worst drafts in franchise history. The team has clearly worked hard to rectify those struggles with Vrabel’s arrival, and so far, things have improved considerably.

“We have to build some depth here to this roster, and you do that from the draft,” Vrabel admitted last year on The Greg Hill Show. “We’ll call it what it is, it hasn’t been real great. The depth of our roster has not been through our draft the last handful of years, and that has to change. We all know that.”
