Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn was just recently asked for an update for a proposed heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua, which still hasn’t officially had its venue announced. In recent months it’s been a big talking point about where the fight actually takes place, and while the UK would seem to be the obvious choice, it seems that others involved are more keen on bringing the fight Stateside.
So, when asked about where things currently stand, Hearn says the fight is being proposed for Madison Square Garden in New York City, despite his feeling that it’s better suited to take place in front of home fans.
“We signed for this fight in the UK,” Hearn said. “We are desperate to deliver this fight for UK fans. However, everybody else wants the fight in America — Turki Alalshikh, Netflix. I can’t speak on behalf of Tyson Fury, I don’t see him kicking up a fuss. Madison Square Garden. So, they’re telling us this is the place it’s going to do the biggest numbers, this is the place it’ll be the biggest fight.
“I disagree. But at the end we’ll fight and we’ll fight and we’ll fight to a point where they’ve breached the contract by doing it in America, or we come to an agreement. Now, these people are our partners and our friends as well. So, it’s very difficult because we wouldn’t have signed the agreement in its form if it was in America. So what we can’t do is just change it like that…We also want the fight to deliver for everybody.
“But as a Brit, as a British promoter, as someone who’s pushed for this fight for so long, I just feel it’s a shame to take it anywhere other than Britain…I don’t know if we’re going to win that race but we’re doing everything we can for British fight fans and I’m becoming very unpopular in that circle by doing so.”
