England central contracts 2026-27: Who gets two years, who gets one and who is out
England are heading into one of their busiest stretches in years. This winter brings Tests in South Africa, Bangladesh and Australia, with white-ball games Down Under in November. Next summer is headlined by the Ashes, and a World Cup in South Africa follows in 12 months.
Against that backdrop, the ECB has announced 39 contracts for 2026-27. There are 30 central deals and nine development deals, a bumper list. England have rewarded the summer’s standout performers while also keeping faith with several players who have slipped out of the Test XI.
Yet only 11 of those 39 players are tied down until 30 September 2028. That window covers both the Ashes and the World Cup. Everyone else is on a shorter commitment or a development deal, which shows who England sees as core and who must still earn security.

The 11 players England are building around and the other 28
Test captain Joe Root and white-ball skipper Harry Brook lead the two-year list. Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Jacob Bethell, Sam Curran and Will Jacks join them. Hampshire quick Sonny Baker has been upgraded to a two-year deal after a strong summer. They form the spine for 2027.
The most striking additions are Jordan Cox and Henry Crocombe. Cox earned his deal after hitting fifties in all three Tests against Pakistan. Crocombe is uncapped, yet he becomes the first England player to sign a multi-year contract before an international appearance, a bet on pace depth for 2027. The other 19 central contracts are shorter.

Ollie Pope and Shoaib Bashir keep theirs despite dropping out of the Test XI, giving England cover in an Ashes year. Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith miss out on longer terms, with Rob Key saying it brings out the best in them.
Brydon Carse remains on his existing deal through September 2027, though his England future is unclear following the incident in Derby. The nine development contracts add youth, including wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew, 18, and leg-spinner Mason Crane, who could play for England again after more than eight years.
Who have been dropped out of England contracts
Zak Crawley is the biggest name England let go, dropped after an Ashes average of 27.30 and not renewed. Left-arm seamer Luke Wood also misses out, having not played since a T20 international in July, even with a World Cup 12 months away. Tom Lawes’ development deal was not renewed.
Ben Stokes and Mark Wood also leave the list, but only because of their international retirements. Ben Stokes’ exit frees up funds for other deals. In a World Cup and Ashes year, that flexibility could prove vital as injuries bite, and the table below shows where everyone stands.

Why the Ashes and World Cup shape every decision
The timing explains the structure. Two-year deals end on 30 September 2028, so they cover next summer’s Ashes and the World Cup in South Africa. England have locked in their core for both tournaments, which gives those 11 players security while everyone else must keep earning their place.
The Ashes adds pressure after England’s 4-1 defeat in Australia last winter. That explains why Ollie Pope and Shoaib Bashir keep one-year deals despite losing Test places. It also explains why Jordan Cox, Emilio Gay and Dan Lawrence stay in the mix with Jacob Bethell set to return.
The World Cup brings a different test. Kevin Pietersen’s mentoring role runs through the tournament, and Brendon McCullum’s white-ball group begins its work in Australia in November. Jos Buttler, Adil Rashid and Phil Salt are on one-year deals, so their World Cup roles must be earned, not assumed.
