On a debut to remember, George Lombard Jr.'s defense stood out most for Yankees

George Lombard Jr.’s MLB debut was electric as the Yankees top prospect smashed a home run for his first hit and helped the team to a 2-0 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

But what was more eye-opening was Lombard’s defense.

That aspect of the shortstop’s game was always considered major league ready, and Lombard showcased it, making every play hit to him and making some difficult plays seem routine.

“A great first night for him. The home run was great, the defense was tremendous,” manager Aaron Boone said of Lombard’s debut. “That play in the hole that he and Jazz turned was a pretty special turn. You see how fluid he is, how physical he is. Certainly a night to remember for him and his family, too.”

The play Boone is referring to happened in the second inning. In a scoreless tie and the Cardinals looking to stack hits together, Blaze Jordan laced a grounder into the hole between short and third base. Lombard ranged to his left, scooped the ball up and fired to Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second in one fell swoop. Chisholm would complete the inning-ending double play.

“Since I can remember, it’s something I always have a love for, a passion for,” Lombard said. “I try to go out there and get a little work in every day and get a little better and help the pitchers with every play that I can make.”

Ryan Weathers, who pitched six scoreless innings and was on the mound for that double play, was impressed with Lombard’s debut and his defense.

“George is a good player. Had a great debut tonight,” Weathers said. “Took it by storm, didn’t look nervous out there at all. Proud of him, proud for his family and hopefully he catches a lot more balls behind me.

“[He’s] super athletic. Didn’t realize he was that long. His reach for that ball, it’s a really far reach. Just looking forward to watching him play.”

But how did Lombard make that play look so easy? 

Lombard says he practices that play often and just brings it into the game with him. 

“One of those plays you practice. I’ve made that play countless times in practice,” he said. “Just get into the game and your body takes over. It’s not much thinking that went into it. Just saw it and tried to make a play on the ball.”

Boone, however, had a difficult time putting what he sees into words. He said he’s marvelled at Lombard’s defense when he spent time with him in the last two spring trainings and believes Lombard’s physical gifts allow him to make those plays…like a certain animal.

“Just the ease at which he makes throws. Never feels like he has to reach for it and it has plenty of life on it,” Boone said. “I just think the athleticism, but the physicality he can play it with, is really what stands out… Like a puma.”
