OKC Thunder pick up Thomas Sorber's
In a truly hard-to-predict move, the Oklahoma City Thunder have given one of their recent prospects more time. They have picked up Thomas Sorber’s 2027-28 team option for $5.1 million on Sunday. He has two years, $12.9 million left on his four-year, rookie-scale contract.
The Thunder had until Monday, Nov. 2, to decide on Sorber’s future. They added him with the No. 15 pick of the 2025 NBA draft. That said, he hasn’t played in nearly a year and a half at any level. Like Nikola Topic — who had his option declined — injuries have derailed his NBA ambitions.
Sorber sustained a torn ACL in Sept. 2025. He missed the entire 2025-26 season. Having a follow-up knee procedure in July 2026, he’s yet to suit up for OKC in the 2026-27 season. Before he even joined the Thunder, his sole collegiate year at Georgetown ended prematurely with foot surgery in Feb. 2025.
There were whispers of the Thunder moving on from Sorber, but it looks like they’re buying him more time. That’s despite OKC’s payroll being about to balloon with several contract extensions kicking in. He gets another year to figure things out as he still awaits his NBA debut.
I guess we’ll see what this means for Sorber’s long-term future. Unlike Topic, I still see a pathway for him to be a contributor this year and beyond. With the number of injuries the Thunder are going through right now, there are certainly minutes up for grabs for the next couple of months.
