Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is poised for another fantastic year, one that should build on a freshman campaign that saw him land in New York as a Heisman finalist. Because of his work last year and what is expected of him this season, Sayin has appeared on a boatload of preseason watch lists, All-American teams, and other accolades, and he just got named to another one.
The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award released its preseason watch list on Wednesday, and Sayin was among the names appearing. The Johnny Unitas Award has been around since 1987 and is handed out annually to college football’s best upperclassman quarterback. Sayin is entering his redshirt sophomore year, but his third year in the program.
Sayin led the nation in completion percentage (77.0 pct.), ranking second nationally in efficiency (177.5) while throwing for 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns (fourth nationally) with only eight interceptions. His completion percentage is the best in Ohio State program history, and his 3,610 passing yards in 2025 rank fifth in single-season program history. Sayin’s 301 pass completions in 2025 rank fourth in single-season program history.
In other words, the California native can do more than surf.

Believe it or not, despite all of the great quarterbacks that have come through the tunnel at Ohio State over the last few years, the Buckeyes have never had a signal-caller take the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award home. Perhaps Sayin can end that drought when the winner is unveiled during ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 11.
