The epic saga begins with the honest train engine driver Shamsher Singh (Dilip Kumar), living a simple, joyful life in a village with his best friend Gurbaksh (Shammi Kapoor) and his inspector son, Pratap (Suresh Oberoi). The happiness is short-lived when the ruthless local smuggler Jagawar Chaudhary (Amrish Puri) brutally murders Pratap for refusing to aid his illegal trade. Blinded by grief, Shamsher kills the henchmen and goes on the run, while his daughter-in-law passes away giving birth to his grandson, Kunal. To accumulate absolute wealth and protect Kunal's future, Shamsher changes his identity to the cold, wealthy underworld don "Sir Shobhraj" and climbs to the top of the criminal syndicate.
