Maestre says 6-1 rout of Spurs could be a ‘game-changer’ for London City

After London City Lionesses trounced Tottenham 6-1 in the Women’s Super League, head coach Eder Maestre said the result could be a “game-changer” for his team.

Captain Alexia Putellas and France international Kadidiatou Diani scored two goals apiece as London City ran riot at Brisbane Road, with Danielle van de Donk and Delphine Cascarino also on target for the visitors.

Maestre’s team were 3-0 up by half-time, with Putellas getting her goals in the third and 34th minutes, building on her first WSL strike in a 2-0 victory over Brighton last week.

Putellas now has 49 goal involvements in her last 50 starts at club and international level, scoring 28 times and providing 21 assists for London City, Barcelona and Spain.

London City have 12 points on the board after five WSL matches, and Maestre believes the dominant nature of their latest win will provide everyone at the club with a major boost.

“The three points are the same as you can have in every game, but this kind of win can be a game-changer, in terms of showing everyone that we are pushing hard,” said Maestre.

“But, at the same time, we need to be humble as well. The teams that are used to being there and occupying these places [at the top] are still there.

“I’m so happy we’re hitting our targets. When you have these kinds of players it is about trying to find chemistry and it takes time.

“It’s a process, and we’re in the process of building something strong.”

49 – Alexia Putellas’ last 50 league starts at club level (Liga F and WSL combined).

Spurs had not lost any of their first four games of 2026-27, taking 10 points, but Martin Ho said they could have no excuses for the way their performance levels dropped.

“Really poor, not acceptable from us as a group. Defensively, we didn’t win the first ball or the second ball. In duels, we were poor. We have to move on,” Ho said.

“The team collectively needs to own that and we will, and that starts with me, I take responsibility for it.

“We were just not at it, but that can’t be the level. Everyone will be disappointed – that was not the level we expect. We conceded six goals and you don’t want to be doing that.”

In Sunday’s other early games, there were also one-sided victories for Brighton, who thumped pointless Charlton Athletic 5-1, and Chelsea.

Sonia Bompastor’s Blues eased to a 3-0 win over London rivals West Ham, with Melvine Malard opening the scoring in the 38th minute, before late goals from Kiera Walsh and Maika Hamano made the points safe.
