The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to end attacks on journalists in the country.
The call was contained in a statement issued by NUJ President, Alhassan Yahya, to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, observed on November 2nd.
Yahya expressed worry over the continued cases of intimidation, arbitrary arrests, physical assaults, cyberbullying and other forms of violence targeted at journalists while carrying out their legitimate duties.
“Failure to prosecute those responsible for such attacks poses a serious threat to press freedom, undermines the rule of law and weakens democratic governance,” he said.
The union urged security agencies to respect the constitutional role of journalists and to see the media as partners in promoting accountability and democracy.
It also called on government institutions, media organisations, civil society groups and international partners to collaborate in putting in place effective safety mechanisms and emergency support systems for journalists, especially those operating in high-risk areas.
The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the protection of media professionals, insisting that no journalist should have to risk their safety, freedom or life for reporting the truth.
