Norman North basketball hires Del City's Chevis Smith as new head coach

Norman North High School’s boys basketball program has turned to one of the state’s rising coaches.

Former Del City coach Chevis Smith has been hired as the program’s next boys basketball coach, athletic director Dusty Porch confirmed to The Oklahoman via text Thursday.

Smith resigned from Del City last week before officially accepting the position Thursday. He replaces Jordy Harris, who spent one season at Norman North and guided the Timberwolves to an 8-17 record.

Smith arrives after a successful one-year stint at Del City, where he led the Eagles to a 21-8 record and a Class 5A state semifinal appearance.

A former standout guard at Duncan, Smith has quickly built one of the state’s strongest coaching résumés. Before Del City, he compiled a 42-14 record in two seasons at Lawton and guided the Wolverines to their first state runner-up finish since 1962. He also previously served as an assistant coach at Chickasha, Casady and Millwood.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Coach Chevis Smith as the next head coach of Norman North boys basketball,” Norman North athletic director Dusty Porch said in a statement to The Oklahoman.

“Coach Smith brings tremendous value to our school — not only on the court, but in the classroom and throughout our community. I truly believe he and his staff will make an immediate impact on our student-athletes and build a program positioned for sustained success for years to come.”
