No. 10 Utah remains the last undefeated Big 12 team standing after 21-13 win over No. 14 Houston

No. 10 Utah’s run game came alive in the second half as the Utes overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to beat No. 14 Houston 21-13.

The win keeps Utah as the only undefeated team in the Big 12. The Utes (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) entered Week 8 as one of three undefeated teams in the conference, but No. 8 Texas Tech lost at Cincinnati and No. 2 BYU lost in double-overtime at UCF.

RB Wayshawn Parker put the Utes up by one with 11:57 to go when he took a direct snap for a five-yard score. After that, Houston ran just eight offensive plays on its next three possessions.

That eighth play resulted in a fumble. After Utah punted back to Houston with 2:20 to go, Jackson Bennee got into the pocket unblocked and strip-sacked Conner Weigman.

With Utah taking over deep in Houston territory, the Cougars clearly let Utah QB Devon Dampier score on the Utes’ first play to get the ball back with a chance to tie the game. But Houston’s final drive of the game came up short of the end zone.

The TD run was Dampier’s 14th carry of the game. He gained 152 yards on those carries and scored two touchdowns. Parker added 47 yards on 13 carries and caught four passes for 46 yards. With the losses by BYU and Texas Tech along with a James Madison loss on Thursday night, Utah is one of three remaining undefeated teams overall along with No. 1 Miami and No. 9 UCLA.

Houston led 3-0 at halftime after Utah missed a field goal to end the second quarter thanks to a dropped snap on the hold. In the first half, the two teams combined for five punts, a turnover on downs, an interception and the two field goal attempts.

A Cougars win would have set up a mess atop the Big 12 with six teams at 3-1. Now, Utah has a game lead on a four-way tie for second that includes BYU, Texas Tech, Arizona and Oklahoma State. Houston (5-2) is now among five teams at 2-2 in conference play thanks to a Week 3 loss to Texas Tech.
