Nick Kyrgios will likely set his sights on a Wimbledon wildcard after a stunning return win in the opening round at the grasscourt Stuttgart Open.

The 31-year-old destroyed world.no 36 and eighth seed Corentin Moutet 6-3 6-4 in just over an hour on Wednesday morning (AEST).

Kyrgios didn’t face a break point versus the enigmatic Frenchman across the entire match, in his first singles match since the Brisbane International on January 6.

Not only did Kyrgios efficiently dispatch Moutet, but he also did it in style with tweeners and drop shots featuring in the performance.

Due to chronic knee and wrist injuries, Kyrgios has only played eight singles match since October 2022, which was the year he made the Wimbledon final – losing to Novak Djokovic.

Wimbledon – which starts June 29 – is yet to announce their wildcards for the event, but you would expect an injury-free Kyrgios performing near his best would be a recipient. 

After the match, Kyrgios spoke about his injury journey and said the fans motivated his return to the tour.

“I feel great and motivated,” Kyrgios said.

“(It’s) quite (an) emotional moment. I had a lot of surgeries and I’m very thrilled to be back.

“I had a wrist reconstruction, I had four knee surgeries.

“But I’m back mostly because of the fans. I staying for you guys”.
