The next big entry in The Legend of Zelda franchise has been officially teased, and there’s something immensely positive that came out of the little bit of information that was provided. 2026 has proven to be a huge year, as the series celebrates its 40th anniversary. In addition to the release of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake on November 5, the franchise was highlighted with new releases and nostalgia throughout the entire year. Even so, with the end of The Legend of Zelda as we know it in 2027, it’s time to start thinking about the future of the franchise.
Now, the first bit of acknowledgment of a game after the release of the remake of Ocarina of Time has been provided, and it’s fueling high hopes among fans. In a statement to Japan Today, which was shared in a post by The Legend of Zelda Updates on X, senior officer and long-time Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma briefly talked about the future of the franchise. “I am very interested to see what the young people will come up with for the future titles,” he mentioned. However, it’s the second part of his statement that sparks hope.
In the statement, Aonuma says that he is “extremely happy to offer my advice as we think together about the next major Zelda game.” Even though it seems he won’t be fully responsible for the development of the next entry in the series, he will be working alongside the current developers to make it happen. No other detail about the future of The Legend of Zelda has been shared, but this new statement actually says a lot. First off, the game will be led by a newer generation of developers.
With it, we can expect new ideas and new approaches to the classic action-adventure formula. The Legend of Zelda has always been about gameplay innovation, so that shouldn’t change. With Aonuma’s involvement, even if he only operates as a supervisor and not a producer, per se, there will likely be a guarantee that the series will remain true to itself. The next game after Zelda: Ocarina of Time has not yet been announced, and based on the statement, its production hasn’t even started yet.
The new statement from Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has led to some noteworthy reactions from fans. In response to the post on X, user GunnerLad mentions that “they need to combine the newer games and the older games,” highlighting the need for “fully fledged dungeons and more weapons.” User Nealjan points out that this was the “psychology behind the Wild games storyline,” as both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom represent “passing on to new generations.”
Several of the responses to the post show that users are surprised that Nintendo has not officially started developing the next game, with some of them complaining that they’ll have to “wait many years” for the next big entry in the series. Considering how important The Legend of Zelda is for Nintendo, especially after its renewed popularity with the Wilds games and the upcoming release of Ocarina of Time, players may not actually have to wait that long before the next project is announced.
The Legend of Zelda franchise follows the adventures of Link, an elf-like Hylian, and Princess Zelda as they protect the land of Hyrule from the evil warlord-turned-demon king Ganon. The series is known for its mix of action, adventure, and puzzle-solving elements, often revolving around the collection of the Triforce, a powerful relic left by the goddesses who created Hyrule.
