Newcastle United have begun their summer transfer business by announcing the arrival of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Ligue 2 side Reims.
Jaouen has signed a long-term contract with Newcastle after joining for a reported £18.5m (€21.6m) fee and will challenge Nick Pope for the number one position next season.
The 20-year-old made 34 appearances in France’s second tier in 2025-26, keeping a division-high 15 clean sheets, but Reims were only able to finish seventh.
He arrives at St James’ Park following the departure of Aaron Ramsdale, who returned to parent club Southampton following his season-long loan with the Magpies.
“I’ve heard so much about the supporters and how they are the best in the country,” Jaouen told the club’s official website.
“The passion of the entire city and the atmosphere at St James’ Park are famous throughout football, and I can’t wait to experience that for myself and become a true Geordie.”
At six feet and six inches tall, Jaouen is the same height as Pope, but the France Under-21 international is considered more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Jaouen was also reportedly of interest to both Chelsea and Real Madrid, but he has chosen to join Eddie Howe’s side as they aim to bounce back after a disappointing campaign.
The Magpies finished 12th in the Premier League last season, while only managing to keep eight shutouts, with only relegated trio West Ham (seven), Wolves and Burnley (both four) managing fewer (level with Leeds United and Manchester United).
