Dutton Ranch’s Era As Taylor Sheridan's Official Yellowstone Replacement Has Only Just Begun

Cameras will soon roll on Dutton Ranch season 2, continuing the Texas-based spinoff’s epic ride as the true heir to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. Appearing at Paramount’s UK upfronts, Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, confirmed that Dutton Ranch season 2 filming begins in early 2027, which would make a late 2027 premiere on Paramount+ possible.

Yellowstone ended its five-season run as one of television’s biggest shows in December 2024, but audiences still have plenty of appetite for more Dutton adventures. Sheridan split the surviving children of the late John Dutton (Kevin Costner) into their own spinoffs. First up in early 2026 was Kayce Dutton’s (Luke Grimes) CBS procedural, Marshals, which quickly became one of the biggest shows on network television.

Dutton Ranch followed in May, transplanting Beth, her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and their adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), to the fictional town of Rio Paloma, Texas. Dutton Ranch was the biggest original series launch on Paramount+, and averaged a record 13.4 million viewers worldwide. Tonally and stylistically, Dutton Ranch feels like the natural offspring of Taylor Sheridan’s flagship neo-Western.

Dutton Ranch Is Yellowstone’s True Successor, Not Marshals

Marshals may be set in the majestic state of Montana, like Yellowstone, but it’s Dutton Ranch that feels much more like the series co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. Beth and Rip’s series is a streaming drama that doesn’t follow a network TV format, focusing more on character-based drama and a more immersive pace than Marshals.

Many Yellowstone fans are disappointed in Marshals, which is a network procedural through-and-through with a Yellowstone sheen. Marshals is episodic and driven by a crime-of-the-week that Kayce and his team of Montana-based U.S. Marshals must solve. While character arcs are serialized, most of Marshals‘ dialogue is on-the-nose exposition, constantly telling the audience details about each week’s plot. Only when the gun-toting action ramps up does Marshals echo Yellowstone.

Taylor Sheridan’s writing style is the opposite of plot-driven. The most successful TV producer in Hollywood admittedly sticks to minimalist plots, preferring to delve into the psyches of his characters, and then peppering Yellowstone with bursts of ultra-violence. Sheridan doesn’t write any of Dutton Ranch, and Beth and Rip’s spinoff adds a female-focused twist to Yellowstone‘s formula, thanks to producer and director Christina Alexandra Voros, Kelly Reilly, who is also an executive producer, and the show’s female writers.

Marshals looks like Yellowstone, but doesn’t feel or play like its predecessor series. In contrast, Dutton Ranch‘s Texas setting isn’t as awe-inspiring as Montana, but Beth and Rip’s saga is Yellowstone evolved. Dutton Ranch remembers the nobler aspects of John Dutton’s complicated legacy, but delivers a fresh spin on the idea of a ranching family trying to hold onto their land, with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) and her brood proving to have darker secrets than the Duttons.

What To Expect From Dutton Ranch Season 2

Dutton Ranch season 1 closed out with several cliffhangers to be resolved by the second season. First and foremost is Carter’s kidnapping by Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo), the Mexican drug kingpin who was Beulah Jackson’s silent partner for decades. Carter’s abduction activated the vengeful side of Beth and Rip that they tried to leave behind in Montana. Dutton-style hell is coming for Mariano and his henchmen.

“Who shot Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney)?” is another major question Dutton Ranch season 2 must answer. Rob-Will had few fans in Rio Paloma, but his daughter, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind), loved him. Oreana only heard the gunshot and didn’t see Rob-Willl’s killer. The prime suspect seems to be Joaquin Reyes (Juan Pablo Raba), but there are others who wanted Rob-Will dead. Meanwhile, no one knows that Oreana is pregnant, likely with Carter’s baby.

Beth and Rip threw their lot in with Beulah and the 10-Petals Ranch, only to learn that they are now accessories to her drug smuggling ring. How the Dutton-Wheelers resolve their beef with Mama B, and whether they can continue working together, is up in the air. Further, Dutton Ranch season 2 will have an increased role for Everett McKinney (Ed Harris), after the Academy Award nominee wanted to quit the show over his miniscule role in season 1.

Dutton Ranch season 2 will be led by new showrunner Benjamin Cavell. After series creator and showrunner Chad Feehan was fired after clashes with the actors and Taylor Sheridan, Cavell was brought to maximize Dutton Ranch‘s potential. By taking over an established global hit series and becoming Dutton Ranch‘s new wagon boss, Cavell was given the keys to the Yellowstone kingdom, with an eye towards a possible crossover with Marshals down the line.

Dutton Ranch season 1 is streaming on Paramount+.
