Cam Skattebo said the New York Giants‘ running backs and offensive line used their weekly meeting to lock in on the small details that decide runs, the kind of alignment he believes can get the ground game going.
“The simple fact of getting on the page with the offensive line, getting on the same page with them, understanding that it’s as little as we might think the offensive line has the guy’s right shoulder, and we want him on the left shoulder,” Skattebo told reporters on Friday.
“It’s those little, tiny things. You can go back and watch a couple of runs. It’s one guy’s arm or a touchdown. We talked about it. We got back to them. They talked to us. We talked to them. We meet with them every week. This was a good meeting this week. We were on the same page and excited to see what we’ve got.”
He noted that the three backs have also stayed in regular communication with one another and the line about preferred paths through the hole so blocking schemes and running styles stay matched.
That focus on execution comes with a clear reminder of the roster reality after the Giants released Najee Harris. Skattebo said the move underscored that no one is guaranteed a spot if production does not follow.
“I mean yeah, nobody’s safe. It’s as simple as that,” Skattebo said. “I think when we go on the field and we perform, if we’re not performing, we understand there’s a possibility of not being here. If I don’t perform, I know there’s a possibility of me not being here. We came in this week. We continue to work. We know where we’re at. We know what we have. If we put that on display, we’re going to be just fine.”
The combination of tighter coordination up front and the understanding that results will determine roles has kept the group locked in during the week.
Skattebo said the backs and linemen left the meeting aligned and ready to show what that work produces when they take the field.
