Pokémon‘s 30th anniversary has already brought us a wave of surprise releases in 2026, and the year isn’t over yet. February saw Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen return on Nintendo Switch, followed by March’s Pokémon Pokopia, which gave us a nice change of pace in a new cozy world-building adventure. In April, we got Pokémon Champions, which gave competitive trainers a dedicated place to test their teams, not to mention the huge release of the newest 30th Celebration TCG set.
Of course, the year’s biggest announcement was arguably the reveal of Pokémon Winds and Waves during February’s Pokémon Presents. Set to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, the Gen 10 titles promise a sprawling new tropical region, a trio of adorable starters, and an entirely new chapter with plenty of surprises in store.
Still, Pokémon apparently has a few more tricks up its sleeve before 2026 wraps up, including another unexpected gaming experience that’s just been officially unveiled. Scheduled to launch on November 7, the newly announced release offers a different approach to the franchise that will appeal to fans of all ages (via Go Nintendo).
A brand-new Pokémon experience is officially on the way, with Pokémon Friends Poké Ball+ scheduled to release on November 7, 2026. Developed by Japanese toy manufacturer Takara Tomy, the upcoming release is a virtual-pet game housed inside a physical Poké Ball, allowing players to interact with and care for their favorite Pokémon in a unique hands-on experience.
The product is an upgraded version of 2025’s Pokémon Friends Poké Ball, which is also known as Poké-Nade Monster Ball in Japan. Interestingly, the new release goes by several names, including More! Poké-Nade Monster Ball in Japanese and More! Poke-Petting Poké Ball on Takara Tomy’s official English website. Despite the different names, these all refer to the same November 7 release.
The updated version features 177 Pokémon in total, including seven main companions that players can interact with directly:
The remaining 170 Pokémon appear as additional Mon that players can encounter throughout the experience, including familiar favorites like Mawile and Emolga.
As for gameplay, Pokémon Friends Poké Ball+ takes inspiration from classic virtual-pet games like the iconic Tamagotchi, where players feed, bathe, and bond with their Pokémon. Its signature feature involves physically stroking the Poké Ball to pet the Pokémon displayed on its screen, with different reactions depending on how players interact with them.
The upgraded device introduces voice interactions, allowing players to call out to their Pokémon and have them respond. There are also several activities and mini-games, including dancing, hide-and-seek, ball games, making sweets, and even Pokémon battles. Players can also decorate their Pokémon’s living space and visit five different destinations, collecting Berries, shopping for furniture, and encountering other Pokémon during outings.

Perhaps the most exciting feature, however, is the multiplayer connectivity, allowing two compatible devices to link up and share the experience. Players can visit each other’s Pokémon, participate in cooperative activities, and find unique co-op-only Pokémon through these interactions, as well as battle it out. Unfortunately, the feature isn’t compatible with previous versions of the toy.
Pokémon Friends Poké Ball+ is priced at ¥8,140, or approximately $52 USD, with preorders currently available in Japan. Although an international release hasn’t been confirmed, the device supports English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese, making it relatively accessible to overseas fans willing to import it, but at the moment the November release only covers Japanese retail.
For Pokémon fans looking for something different from the franchise’s traditional RPGs, this adorable new release could be a just what you’re after to continue celebrating the 30th anniversary.
