HBO’s Lanterns may have finished its first season, but a brand-new Green Lanterns series is on the horizon, and the episode count has just been confirmed.
Lanterns premiered in mid-August and starred Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, members of the Green Lantern Corps who begin investigating a murder case in the Midwest with extraterrestrial connections. The show had one of the biggest launches ever for HBO Max and earned a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. A writers’ room has opened for season 2, but HBO has yet to make an official renewal announcement.
Until there’s definitive news on that front, DC is moving ahead with a second Green Lanterns project. DC Studios co-chair and co-CEO Peter Safran told Collider that the upcoming animated series My Adventures with Green Lantern will have 10 half-hour episodes. It’ll be “tonally similar” to My Adventures with Superman but will be “very different” on a thematic level. “We’re in the stages of reviewing animatics and animation on that right now,” he revealed.
My Adventures with Green Lantern is a spinoff of My Adventures with Superman, the animated show that debuted in 2023 on Adult Swim. Jack Quaid voices Clark Kent/Superman, who comes into his own as the famous superhero. Clark and Lois Lane fall for each other, and they work with Jimmy Olsen to protect Metropolis from various DC villains. Other voice actors include Alice Lee, Ishmel Sahid and Kiana Madeira.
The series has earned universal acclaim and a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score currently sitting at 80%. My Adventures with Superman has been nominated for Best Animated Television Series or Special at the Saturn Awards. Three seasons have aired so far, with the most recent installment wrapping up in August.
A fourth season has not been greenlit yet, but in the meantime, the spinoff My Adventures with Green Lantern is in the works, with Safran now confirming that the inaugural season will have 10 episodes, the same as for Superman.
Whereas Lanterns revolves around Hal Jordan and John Stewart, My Adventures with Green Lantern will center on Green Lantern Corps member Jessica Cruz, a character who first made an appearance on My Adventures with Superman. Moana‘s Auliʻi Cravalho voices Jessica and will reprise the role for the spinoff, which does not have a premiere date yet. Jake Wyatt and Brendan Clogher are serving as showrunners and executive producers after having the same roles on the animated Superman series.
As the DC Universe continues on the big screen with the current film Clayface and 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, as well as The People v. Gorilla Grodd and Mister Miracle on the small screen, non-DCU content is still moving forward, with My Adventures with Green Lantern exploring characters like Jessica Cruz that the live-action Lanterns hasn’t focused on.
