Nets' Michael Porter Jr., Peyton Watson discuss Watson leaving Nuggets

Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has some important matters to address this offseason as he is eligible to sign a contract extension with the Nets at any point over the next year. Brooklyn and Porter will likely try to close the extension matter before the 2026-27 NBA season starts, but he is spending part of his offseason talking to one of his former teammates.

“It was a bittersweet feeling when the news finally came. I remember during the summer, just going through the ebbs and flows of negotiations and talks with the team and my agents and just understanding that we had gotten to a point where Denver was between a rock and a hard place financially,” Cleveland Cavaliers forward Peyton Watson to Porter on his “Curious Mike” platform. Porter and Watson share the common thread of leaving the Denver Nuggets recently.

“Everybody was aware of them facing the tax bill and just kind of the way things shook out. At the beginning with free agency, it was like a few teams had cap space, but then, the cap just dried up super quick,” Watson continued. “A lot of teams were not willing to go through the the war that restricted free agency is. There’s still some really good restricted free agents on the market.”

After extended negotiations, the Nuggets traded Watson to the Cavaliers in a 5-team deal where Denver received Cleveland’s 2031 first-round pick as part of the exchange. When it comes to why this conversation between Porter and Watson is interesting, the Nuggets traded Porter to the Nets last offseason as the team was looking to save salary cap space, but he had already received his extension from Denver prior to the trade.

As it stands, it seems that Porter and Watson are happy with where they ended up after being traded away by the Nuggets, but it also appears that both have ties to Denver that still make those moves harder to process. Whether this offseason ends with Porter getting an extension from Brooklyn or not, he is looking to win as many games as possible next season. In the meantime, he checked in with his former teammate in Watson, who went through a similar experience this summer.
