Netflix Officially Confirms The Diplomat’s Replacement
The Diplomat remains Netflix’s flagship political thriller, and the show’s increasingly impressive run on the small screen appears to be far from over. Yet, it looks as though the streaming giant has been hedging its bets in the genre, by backing a potential replacement for Keri Russell’s Emmy-winning series.
Perhaps with one eye on uncertainty over The Diplomat‘s fate past season 4, Netflix recently announced the impending release of another TV show intended to raise the bar for political thrillers on streaming. Set for its debut in the first half of 2027, The Lords’ Day promises to be every bit as gripping as Debora Cahn’s celebrated tale of ambassadorship and ambition.
Much like key storylines across multiple seasons of The Diplomat, this upcoming series centers on the lockdown of a major government building in London, as well as a high-profile hostage situation. Only, the stakes are arguably even higher in The Lords’ Day, since the building in question is the British Parliament itself, and every member of the House of Lords is facing imminent danger.
Although Netflix has now confirmed that The Diplomat isn’t going anywhere, it seems that the streaming platform’s most bankable original drama to be set in the corridors of power faces fresh competition to be the undisputed number one in its genre next year. With each new casting addition that The Lords’ Day confirms, it looks like an even more formidable challenger to Kate Wyler’s throne.
Netflix Has Found A New Replacement For The Diplomat

Before The Diplomat was officially renewed for season 5, Netflix must have pondered the possibility of finding a permanent replacement for the series. Regardless of its renewal, however, The Lords’ Day still works as an alternative political thriller on the same streaming platform, which seems likely to be released much earlier in 2027.
Billed as a six-episode miniseries based on a novel of the same name by House of Cards author Michael Dobbs, the show was never intended to be a direct substitution for The Diplomat. Instead, it’s designed to entice fans of the hugely successful political thriller with a similar setting and familiar plotlines, while striking a very different tone.
Netflix made The Lords’ Day official back in March 2026, but its release still appears to be several months away. Several news outlets including the BBC reported filming for the show taking place around London’s Houses of Parliament in August. Now that there’s no danger of it interfering with The Diplomat‘s run in the streaming charts this fall, the miniseries should effectively serve as its more established rival’s Netflix replacement for the spring schedule of 2027.
The Lords’ Day features an all-star cast, including British acting royalty Timothy Spall and Gemma Whelan. Snowfall‘s Damson Idris plays its antiheroic protagonist Harry Jones, and espionage thriller specialists Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent – of Spooks fame – have penned the script.

While Netflix hasn’t yet disclosed any plan to extend The Lords’ Day beyond its six-episode adaptation of a Michael Dobbs novel, there is scope for the show to become a multi-season franchise. Its central character Harry Jones, an ex-spy who finds himself rubbing shoulders with some of Britain’s most powerful politicians, actually appears in six different books written by Dobbs.

In theory, the casting of Damson Idris in The Lords’ Day could lead to five further installments of a Harry Jones saga on Netflix, which could mount a serious challenge The Diplomat‘s supremacy on the streaming platform. Just as Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler conducted dangerous fieldwork in war-torn countries before her ambassadorial role in London, Jones has been part of perilous intelligence missions for the UK Secret Service.
There’s more to both protagonists than meets the eye, but they both ultimately serve as flawed heroes navigating the murky world of geopolitics while stationed in Britain’s capital. The Lords’ Day will almost certainly be a must-watch for fans of The Diplomat, and could be the start of a lengthy tenure in a career-defining role for its main star.
