Nebraska track and field concluded day one of the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. The Huskers sent 19 qualifiers to the championships, but they had already secured multiple podium finishes. Dyson Wicker leads the pack after claiming the national title in the men’s pole vault.
Wicker punched his ticket to Eugene after clearing 5.37m (17-7 ¼) to tie for seventh at the NCAA West Regional. The sophomore delivered big time in the championship, breaking the all-time conditions school record, after clearing 5.85m (19-2 ¼), the only vaulter to clear 19 feet on the day.
Wicker is now the third Husker in program history to win in the men’s outdoor pole vault and is the team’s second national champion in the last three years. The Heath, Texas, previously took fourth place at indoor nationals and won the gold in the event at the Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Nebraska competed in a slew of field events on Wednesday, earning a few more spots on the podium in the process. Keyshawn Strachan secured the silver medal in the men’s javelin, launching a throw of 80.65m (264-7), taking second by nearly 10 feet and missing first by over five.
Cade Moran also made the podium for Nebraska, winning the bronze in the men’s shot put after setting a new personal best. He heaved the shot put 20.21m (66-3 ¾) to finish third. Fellow Husker Hencu Lamberts finished just behind him in fifth with a throw of 19.71m (64-8).
Nebraska continues on Thursday with the women’s 4×100-meter relay, women’s javelin, women’s shot put and the women’s 400-meter hurdles. All events can be viewed on ESPN2.
