The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Vincent Olatunji, has called for robust privacy safeguards to protect students’ personal data following the launch of the Digitalised Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS).
Dr Olatunji made the call while speaking as a panellist at the official launch of DNEMIS, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education, during a session titled “Data-driven Education Planning and Management as Components of National Planning.”
He commended the ministry for introducing the digital platform but stressed the need for strong technical and organisational measures to ensure the security and privacy of students’ personal information.
According to him, the platform should adopt the principles of “Privacy by Design,” including a comprehensive privacy policy, encryption, transparency, data minimisation, and end-to-end security, to build users’ trust while ensuring accurate and secure education data.
Dr Olatunji also reaffirmed the NDPC’s commitment to supporting the Federal Ministry of Education in aligning the initiative with global data protection standards and best practices.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, acknowledged the importance of data protection and privacy in the education sector and expressed the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the NDPC to ensure compliance on the newly launched platform.
The minister subsequently directed the DNEMIS implementation team to begin engagement with the Commission.
Other panellists at the event included Adeyemi Adeniran, Director of Educational Planning, Research and Development at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs Obianuju Anigbogu; Vanessa Lee of UNICEF Nigeria; and a representative of Matthew Verghis.
