Nathan Fillion remains a reliable star across both the big and small screens. Getting his start as Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds on Firefly, Fillion has gone on to star in other shows like Castle, Santa Clarita Diet, and, more recently, The Rookie. In addition to his work in TV, Fillion has also featured in a number of notable movies, including those in both the MCU and the DCU. Though Firefly remains one of Fillion’s most notable early roles, a 2006 film has stood the test of time and become a cult classic. Now, it’s about to make a comeback.

Per a new listing on Gruv, Slither, James Gunn’s R-rated sci-fi horror movie, is getting a new 20th Anniversary Edition 4K UHD release. The special release is priced at $36.99 and has a release date set for December 8, 2026, with pre-orders now open.

Slither finally released on 4K UHD this past June, but the upcoming 20th Anniversary Edition is specifically designed to celebrate 20 years of the cult classic. The upcoming release is a 4K scan of the 35mm interpositive, which Gunn and cinematographer Gregory Middleton have both approved. In addition to featuring Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, the release includes two audio commentaries, one with Gunn, Fillion, and Michael Rooker, and another with just Gunn and Fillion. Other special features include interviews with key creatives, behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as a set tour from Fillion himself.

Starring Fillion as sheriff Bill Pardy, with a supporting cast that includes Rooker and Elizabeth Banks, Slither follows the residents of a small town as they fight back against a slug-like alien parasite. The 95-minute horror movie marked Gunn’s first ever feature film as a director and came just two years after he wrote the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead (2004). Slither earned generally positive reviews from critics and has an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it wasn’t a box office hit, grossing just $12 million worldwide.

Though Slither wasn’t a box office success at the time, its reputation has only grown in the years since, and it now has a passionate fan following. The film also marked the start of Fillion and Gunn’s working relationship, and Filllion has now appeared in many Gunn projects, including Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), The Suicide Squad (2021), and Superman (2025). Fillion is also expected to reprise his role as Guy Gardner in Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

It remains to be seen whether Fillion and Gunn will ever work together again on something that isn’t a superhero project, but Slither evidently remains a seminal film for both figures. For those who have a soft spot for this wild 2006 horror, the upcoming 20th Anniversary Edition 4K UHD release could be the perfect way to celebrate the movie two decades later.
