More potentially troubling injury news for the Commanders

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters, by all accounts, had a very strong offseason. He significantly upgraded the defense with youth and speed, gave quarterback Jayden Daniels more help in the backfield and at wide receiver and tight end. He has seemingly unearthed a potential gem in undrafted rookie kicker Drew Stevens.

But one move could come back to haunt Peters: releasing Tyler Biadasz and essentially handing the job to veteran Nick Allegretti. On Day 1 of training camp three weeks ago, Allegretti left practice with a calf strain. His absence highlighted a potential problem there if he were to miss time. After missing almost three full weeks, Allegretti returned to practice on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he departed practice early again, according to John Keim of ESPN.

Uh oh.

Keim didn’t say why Allegretti left practice or whether he reaggravated the previous injury, but since it was his first day in pads, it’s a major concern for Washington.

If he misses time again, that means the Commanders will have to rely on Julian Good-Jones and rookie sixth-round pick Matt Gulbin. The pair has a combined two career NFL snaps. Good-Jones has had an up-and-down camp, while Gulbin has had some impressive moments. Gulbin earned the praise of head coach Dan Quinn earlier this week, with Quinn saying he wanted to see him get more work, perhaps at guard.

If Washington is looking for help at center, it may not be the only team. Other injuries at the position have occurred across the league, including Biadasz, now with the Chargers. If Allegretti is out for any period of time, Peters may be forced to look at the trade market for help.
