Roma have opened talks with Nottingham Forest over a loan move for Brazilian centre-back Morato, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, with the two clubs discussing a loan containing a purchase option that Forest want turned into an obligation under certain conditions.
Di Marzio reports the clubs “have opened initial contacts,” while LaRoma24 adds that Morato has already reached an agreement in principle with Roma on personal terms, a “1+4” contract running through 2031.
The move is tied to the departure of Roma defender Jan Ziolkowski, who is closing in on a switch to Monza: LaRoma24 reports Parma are also interested in Ziolkowski, and his exit is what would create the space, and the funds, for Roma to complete a deal for Morato.
Morato, 25, came through São Paulo’s academy before moving to Portugal, where he made 86 appearances for Benfica and won a league title and a Portuguese Super Cup.
Nottingham Forest signed him from Benfica for around €11 million in 2024, and he has made 66 appearances in two seasons in the Premier League, reaching a Europa League semi-final with the club along the way.
For Roma, bringing in a centre-back with Champions League-level pedigree and Premier League experience on loan would be an efficient way to replace Ziolkowski without committing fully upfront. For Forest, recouping value on a €11 million signing via a loan-to-buy structure would offset the fee while keeping the door open to a permanent sale if Morato’s future with the club is uncertain.
Status: Talks are at an early stage. Morato has a personal agreement with Roma, but the club-to-club negotiation with Nottingham Forest over the loan structure, and Ziolkowski’s own departure, both still need to be resolved.
