The San Diego Padres were eliminated by the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS after an intense four-game series. While the Padres go home empty-handed, they saw a lot of promise from their team.

But now, they have to prepare for a busy offseason where they’ll have a lot of massive decisions to make about players set to hit the open market. The top two are obviously Michael King and Adrian Morejon.

According to MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided.com, the Padres have “mutual” interest with both King and Morejon, indicating that a reunion with both despite their likely active markets is within the realm of possibility.

Padres have ‘mutual’ interest in bringing back King, Morejon

“King is open to returning to San Diego, and the Padres are open to bringing him back.” Murray writes. “… The Padres have interest in keeping Morejon, and it’s believed to be mutual.”

This report from Murray on both King and Morejon, easily the biggest players the Padres have to worry about from a lengthy list of players set to hit the open market, is a very welcome one.

While there’s no indication that A.J. Preller will get either deal done, the report of mutual interest for both King and Morejon to come back to the Padres in free agency is a very good sign.

It’s going to cost the Padres a ton, as neither pitcher is going to jeopardize their chance this offseason to land a massive new contract. But the Padres are looking likely to have a chance to match any offer that’s made.

If the Padres can match, or even beat, an offer brought to Morejon or King by another club, then that pitcher might be more willing to come back to San Diego.

After King’s postseason heroics, he’s someone the Padres should be willing to break the bank to keep. Morejon is a bit trickier, especially if teams are going to try to turn him into a starting pitcher.

But this report from Murray ahead of the MLB offseason makes it clear the Padres will try to bring both back, and both pitchers are interested in returning to San Diego for the foreseeable future as well.
