Minnesota-Mississippi State line movement points to a potential classic

The Gophers originally opened as high as 2.5-point betting favorites for this week’s game against Mississippi State. According to The Action Network, the consensus odds have continued to flip back and forth throughout the week, with the Bulldogs being favored by as much as 1.5. As of Friday morning, Minnesota is currently a one-point favorite. Could we be looking at a potential classic on Saturday afternoon?

Realistically, the consistent change in betting odds is pretty standard for a nonconference matchup in Week 2. Mississippi State and Minnesota were both viewed as potential wildcard teams with young quarterbacks heading into the season, and blowout wins in Week 1 didn’t tell us much. Nobody really knows who should be favored in Saturday’s game. But approaching college football with common sense and reason is boring.

With the current total set at over/under 54.5 points, there’s a scenario where Minnesota and Mississippi State easily clear that number, and we see a back-and-forth shootout. Both teams made improvements to their defenses in the offseason after rather disappointing 2025 campaigns.

The Gophers made transfer portal splashes with Cal pass rusher TJ Bush Jr. and Michigan State cornerback Aydan West, while the Bulldogs brought in Zach Arnett as their new defensive coordinator. After Mississippi State opened with a 62-13 win over UL Monroe and the Gophers comfortably beat Eastern Illinois 59-7, their new-look defenses will be tested in Week 2.

Drake Lindsey showed us last season that he can hold his own in back-and-forth offensive games. There were three lead changes and three ties against Northwestern, and he was 20 of 30 for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 38-35 loss. There were four lead changes and two ties against Rutgers, and he went 31 of 41 for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 31-28 win.

Although Mississippi State never led, Kamario Taylor looked impressive in last year’s 38-19 Egg Bowl loss to Ole Miss. He compiled 351 yards of total offense in that game with two rushing touchdowns, which was his first career start.

Minnesota is historically known as a run-first, defensive team under P.J. Fleck, but that has not been the case over the last two seasons. They were 21st in pass play percentage in 2025 at 55.1%, and they were 32nd in 2024 at 52.5%. They’ve become a team that passes to set up the run under offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh Jr., and a Jeff Lebby-led offense at Mississippi State might be the perfect dance partner for a shootout.

The Bulldogs have ranked outside the top 100 in points allowed per game in each of Lebby’s two seasons as head coach. With both teams still figuring out their 2026 identity in Week 2, I am leaning heavily towards Saturday’s game being a high-scoring back-and-forth affair between two talented quarterbacks.
