Kyle Whittingham’s Michigan Wolverines trailed 3-0 at the half against Penn State in Ann Arbor, just days after landing transfers to help salvage their season. Whittingham’s Bryce Underwood-led offense was anemic for the second straight week as the Michigan quarterback threw two interceptions causing his head coach to make an honest admission.

He spoke before halftime and sounded frustrated.

“First of all we’ve gotta get something going on offense, we’ve got absolutely nothin’ going, not runnin’ the ball well, only team not running the ball as well as us is them…But, two turnovers, I don’t have an answer for ya right now, we’ve gotta talk about it at halftime (and) we’ve gotta get somethin’ goin’.”

The Wolverines had zero points and four interceptions in their last two halves of football dating back to their loss at Minnesota before their recent bye week. Calls intensified for backup QB Tommy Carr, the grandson of legendary Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr, as halftime continued at Michigan Stadium.

Underwood missed open receivers including a streaking Andrew Marsh downfield on an underthrown deep ball that was intercepted. Jordan Marshall had 30 yards on seven carries to lead Michigan on the ground going into the locker room while Carson Hansen had 9 carries for 29 yards to lead Matt Campbell’s Nittany Lions.

Whittingham’s loss for words before the half seemed to be anecdotal evidence that a quarterback change might be imminent. Underwood is a sophomore and Carr is a freshman, but the former’s mistakes seemed unforgivable for a team with Big Ten title aspirations before the year started.
