Michigan football faces massive media backlash after loss to MSU

It wasn’t just a terrible display on Saturday at The Big House, it was outright disenfranchising.

Michigan football wasn’t just lifeless against rival MSU, but the Spartans found new life in all areas, despite being perhaps the most banged up team in the Big Ten. The moribund Wolverine offense was on brand, but not in a good way. The defense was subpar, at least compared to the resume that Michigan had put out thus far, and considering that the Spartan offense entered as even worse than that of the maize and blue, even allowing 15 points to that outfit has to be seen as a failure.

There were a lot of bold reactions to the 15-6 loss by Michigan football from media types and those within the Wolverine ecosphere, including several former players . Here are some of the best we could find on X.

Josh Pate

Michigan has to scrap this

Connor Stalions

Good evening @NCAA, I’d like to self-report all of my texts with Kyle Whittingham and Jason Beck.

— Connor Stalions (@cpstalions) November 8, 2026

Trevor McCue

I’m done. Says it’s all on him and then takes this shot at the players.
Everything these guys went through, they stayed.
Guarnera, Sprague, and Frazier all could have started elsewhere. You don’t think Marsh had opportunities? You brought JJ. Savion Hiter was the RB in the… https://t.co/y8ESrYSSIN

Josh Dubow

Michigan is 15th team in last 15 seasons to allow 21 points or fewer in each of the first 9 games of a season. The other 14 went a combined 119-7 in those games. Michigan is 5-4

Khalid Hill

Moms was on me about tweeting cause i eventually wanna go back to college coaching but like as a former player how can I just sit here 🤷🏾‍♂️

— Khalid Hill (@Thatboylid80) November 8, 2026

Channing Stribling

Actually, we good. It gotta get ugly before it gets great

— Channing Stribling (@C_Strib8) November 8, 2026

Ralph D. Russo

That is a grotesque loss for Michigan.

— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoATH) November 8, 2026

Derick Hutchinson

If Michigan doesn’t fire Kyle Whittingham, then it is not a serious football program.

— Derick Hutchinson (@Derick_Hutch) November 8, 2026

Tom Fornelli

It’s not just that Michigan is losing at home to Michigan State, it’s that it’s being shutout at home by a Michigan State team that’s 0-5 in B1G play.

— Tom Fornelli (@TomFornelli) November 8, 2026

Jeff Riger

Sparty was missing 18 players.

13 were starters.

They lost 6 straight.

Hadn’t won a Big 10 game.

And, Michigan just lost Paul Bunyan to them.

At home!

Maybe the most embarrassing UM loss ever?

Even Brady Hoke and Rich Rodriguez are laughing at Kyle Whittingham.

Pathetic.

— Jeff Riger (@riger1984) November 8, 2026

Braylon Edwards

But its Bryce Underwood’s fault! 😑

— Braylon Edwards (@OfficialBraylon) November 8, 2026

Stewart Mandel

I can’t claim to have watched every Michigan-Michigan State game ever played, but I can’t imagine there have been many worse than this.

— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) November 8, 2026

Sam Webb

Michigan’s offense hasn’t just failed to improve this season. It’s gotten progressively WORSE. Getting shut out for 58 minutes by one of the worst Michigan State teams in program history is about as damning an indictment as you’ll find.

Bad football. Plain and simple.

— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) November 8, 2026

Huge

Michigan should fire the entire coaching staff.

— HUGE (@Hugeshow) November 8, 2026

Big Ten Ben

Per my research (since at least 1995 on @Stathead, but quite possibly longer)…

Tonight is the FIRST win for Michigan State that the Spartans did NOT score a TD.

Tonight is also the FIRST loss for Michigan that the Wolverines did NOT allow a TD.

History. https://t.co/dqE8zWdU3k

Charles Woodson

What am I watching

— Charles Woodson (@CharlesWoodson) November 8, 2026

TJ Lang

Bryce, I’m sorry.

We all owe him an apology.

This coaching staff is so pathetically horrendous. Fire everyone in the tunnel.

— Teej. (@TJLang70) November 8, 2026

Dave Portnoy

100% not on Carr. It wasnt on Underwood either Its on that nitwit Jason Beck https://t.co/DBgpSOL33m

Taylor Lewan

Geoff Schwartz

Whit might be done at Michigan anyways but he’s got a half before he might get fired tomorrow.

— Geoff Schwartz (@geoffschwartz) November 8, 2026

George Wrighster III

Michigan’s offense is atrocious.

Hard to watch.

I don’t think the QB is the issue.

— George Wrighster III (@georgewrighster) November 8, 2026

Pablo Torre

Michigan needed the refs to bail them out to beat Western Michigan.

They lost at Minnesota for the first time since the 1970’s

They lost a game where Curt Cignetti said once we went up 6-0″ they couldn’t beat us.”

Yet tonight, is the worst game of their season.

By a mile. pic.twitter.com/nfsziHH6a4

— Aaron Torres (@Aaron_Torres) November 8, 2026

RGIII

Michigan has to blow it up.

— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) November 8, 2026

John U. Bacon

That was the single worst Michigan football game I’ve ever seen.
Period.

— John U. Bacon (@Johnubacon) November 8, 2026

Former HOTY Garrett Moores

We have to make an OC change this is insane

— Garrett Moores (@gmoores11) November 8, 2026

Brandon Walker

Honestly Michigan should just cheat.

— Brandon Walker (@BFW) November 8, 2026

Alejandro Zuniga

I’m not sure how a coaching tenure recovers from being embarrassed by in-state rivals (who were 2-6! With zero wins over power conference opponents!) like this

— Alejandro Zúñiga (@ByAZuniga) November 8, 2026

Scott Bell

There were a lot of candidates for “worst moment of the season” heading into tonight. I appreciate the Michigan football team doing everyone a solid and giving us all a lot of clarity on that front.
