Michael McDowell's race recap in the 2026 Chase race at Talladega

Michael McDowell added another solid superspeedway performance to his NASCAR Cup Series resume on Sunday, finishing 10th in the YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Spire Motorsports driver started 23rd and steadily progressed through the field during an afternoon filled with shifting drafting lanes and strategic decisions.

McDowell remained competitive as the field worked through the first two stages, avoiding the significant problems that affected numerous contenders. His experience at drafting tracks proved valuable during a race that featured 41 lead changes among 15 different drivers.

The most important moment came on Lap 183 when a massive accident eliminated several competitors running near the front. McDowell avoided being eliminated and remained positioned inside the leading group during the subsequent caution period.

He entered overtime with an opportunity to battle for a stronger result but ultimately crossed the finish line 10th, completing all 189 laps. The performance marked McDowell’s seventh top-10 finish of the season and earned valuable championship points.

McDowell remains 20th in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings with 643 points after missing the championship Chase. With Martinsville and Homestead-Miami remaining, McDowell will look to continue adding strong results and secure a top-20 championship finish.
