Miami will ‘keep growing’ after Nashville defeat, insists Hoyos

Guillermo Hoyos insists Inter Miami will keep growing rather than panicking after their defeat to Nashville SC last time out.

Miami were thrashed 4-1 by Nashville in a top-of-the-table clash in the Eastern Conference, with Lionel Messi missing a penalty for the Herons.

Hoyos’ side missed the chance to go top of the East after scoring just once from a total of five big chances, while it marked their third consecutive defeat across all competitions.

Miami lost to both Leon and Monterrey in the Leagues Cup, failing to qualify for the quarter-finals despite their opening win over Atletico San Luis.

And things do not get much easier for the Herons following their defeat at the weekend, with a trip to the in-form Philadelphia Union up next on Wednesday.

However, Hoyos has called for calm as he believes his Miami side will bounce back from their humbling loss to Nashville.

“A defeat like this won’t stop us; we keep growing,” said Hoyos.

“We’ll rest and start working toward our goals again. You don’t lose your objectives just because of one defeat; quite the opposite, we are going to aim higher, keep growing, and continue the development of the squad.

“I am grateful for everything the players did. People might point out the 4-1 loss, but the team endured a huge emotional toll; you have to be out there on the pitch to understand it.

“So, beyond the unfavourable result, there were very valuable things on display, and that is what really matters to me.”

Although Philadelphia are 13th in the East, they are on a four-game winning run in MLS since returning from the World Cup break.

The Union won just one of three Leagues Cup matches, but defeated New York City FC 3-2 last weekend.

Philadelphia Union – Cavan Sullivan

Sullivan assisted two of the Union’s three goals in their win over NYCFC on Sunday.

At 16 years, 332 days old, Sullivan became the third player to record multiple goal contributions in a regular-season match before turning 17 (after Santino Quaranta and Freddy Adu).

After scoring in 10 of 11 matches for club and country from the beginning of May through the World Cup round of 16, Messi has scored in just one of his last seven appearances, including failing to score in his last three in MLS.

Messi last went longer without a league goal from September 2023 to March 2024 (six straight games).

Inter Miami have lost three straight matches in all competitions, after suffering only three defeats in their previous 30 matches dating back to October 2025 (W20 D7).

Philadelphia, meanwhile, came from 2-0 down to beat NYCFC 3-2, the second straight match in which they came from two goals down to win.

The Union are the second team in MLS history to record multi-goal comeback wins in consecutive league matches (after D.C. United in July and August 2015).

However, Miami have won five of their last six matches against Philadelphia in all competitions (D1), including recording a 6-4 home win when the sides met on May 24.

Miami have not kept a clean sheet in any of the six matches, but they have outscored the Union 20–11.
