The New York Mets have some big question marks for the upcoming MLB offseason, especially when it comes to Bo Bichette.

After signing a three-year deal last offseason, which contained opt-outs after the first and second seasons, Bichette has a big decision to make about whether he’ll take his $42 million option for the 2027 season or hit free agency this winter.

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, Bichette’s plan this offseason has been revealed. Once the 2026 season comes to a close, Bichette is planning to use October to determine what he’ll do with his $42 million option for next season.

“Bo Bichette plans to spend October mulling over his opt-out decision,” Sammon reports. “… The Mets’ postseason absence gives Bichette plenty of time to decide on his player option for next season, worth $42 million…”

Bichette will need to make a decision this offseason about whether to come back to the Mets for $42 million in 2027 or hit the open market.

It’s a weaker free agent class, so it would not be a total shocker if he took a chance in free agency to land a longer-term deal.

Bichette will make his option decision for the Mets within a month after the 2026 season comes to a close. The reason why is simple.

All players with a player option will have to make their final decisions five days after the World Series ends. Since the Mets aren’t going to participate in the World Series, Bichette will have plenty of time to make his decision beginning once the 2026 season ends.

As Sammon notes, “At this juncture, it’s easier to see Bichette staying put.” But with the weaker free agent market, it would not be a total surprise if he tested the open market in hopes of landing a long-term deal.

Bichette hasn’t made his decision just yet, as his plan is to figure out his MLB future this October after the Mets’ 2026 season ends.

Either outcome is possible for Bichette, but the most likely outcome is that he’s back for the 2027 MLB season. He could still hit the open market, but with a $42 million contract on the table after a down year, it makes sense for him to come back to New York.
