This entire offseason, the Dallas Mavericks have been trying to figure out what to do with their roster. This comes after they hired new head coach Dusty May and brought in a new general manager as well.

Kyrie Irving has commonly been the topic of discussion. For the most part, it hasn’t seemed like he would be traded.

“Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz have both stated they foresee Irving staying, as they think he and Cooper Flagg can be good fits alongside each other. However, Irving is 34 years old and is coming off an ACL injury. By the time he takes the floor in October, it will have been 19 months since he played in an NBA game,” SI’s Austin Veazey wrote.

However, it does feel like if the Mavericks get off to a rough start, the two sides could eventually part ways.

“The Mavericks, as we’ve been writing since mid-June, have consistently swatted away trade interest this offseason in nine-times-an-All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. Rival teams, however, continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches. The primary factor fueling that curiosity, of course, is that fact that Irving is 34 and Mavericks star forward Cooper Flagg is 19. Not your average age gap between the team’s two best players,” The Stein Line’s Marc Stein wrote.

The most recent report from NBA insider Marc Spears suggests that if Irving wants out, management respects him enough to work with him and find him a new home.

“Masai also has a really good relationship as you mentioned with Kyrie Irving. I think it’s the kind of relationship where if Kyrie says, hey, Masai, like, this isn’t for me, I think they could work together to get something done. I don’t think would be something ugly. I think there would be interest in Kyrie if he’s as healthy as he looks,” Spears said.

Simply put, the future of Irving seems to be in his hands. Whatever Irving thinks is best for his future could determine the direction that management takes. For now, the NBA champion wants to be in Dallas.

However, if the team doesn’t start off as strongly as he’d like, he could very well want to be traded to a contender. It is still unclear what will happen regarding Irving’s future, but a trade cannot be ruled out.
