The Dallas Mavericks are facing an interesting situation as they figure out what their future will look like, largely because of the age gap between Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg. There is no secret that the two players are at very different points in their careers.

For this reason, trade rumors have started to emerge. In fact, Irving is likely to be the biggest name available at the trade deadline.

“I think he’s going to be the most in-demand player at the trade deadline because he’s not on the Mavericks’ timeline. And we talked about Houston. I think Detroit’s another team that will be salivating over getting Kyrie Irving,” Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix said.

However, Dallas is making its stance on the point guard clear for now. When teams have called to check in early, the Mavericks have reportedly made it clear that they aren’t interested in entertaining those conversations.

“The Mavs have consistently told teams they don’t even want to field your call,” Marc Stein of the Stein Line said.

Dallas has gotten off to a pretty solid start to the season, so there isn’t much reason to trade Irving right now. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon truly believes the Mavericks aren’t going to trade Irving when it comes down to it.

“The more I see the team, the more I’m around the team, the more I think it’s going to be awfully hard to trade him. Not that there won’t be a big market, there will be, but if they’ve got a chance to compete for a play-in, play-off spot. I just think it’s going to be really tough to move Kyrie. Also, as much as he means to that locker room, as well as he’s working with Cooper. It was beautiful basketball and, basketball-wise, they are a phenomenal fit,” MacMahon said.

As of right now, Irving’s future in Dallas seems pretty clear, as he doesn’t appear likely to be involved in trade discussions. The Mavericks know what they have in the veteran NBA champion.

Not only is Irving a great player to have on the roster, but he is also a valuable leader who could play a major role in the development of the team’s younger players. That is something Dallas might not be willing to give up.
