United States Men’s National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasized the significance of having Folarin Balogun in his team following a turbulent few days that saw President Donald Trump reach out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino prior to a contentious suspension of his red-card ban.
Balogun received a straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, ruling him out of the Round of 16 game against Belgium. However, FIFA made the divisive call to suspend his one-game ban until after the World Cup, drawing intense scrutiny toward the sport’s governing body.
The controversy intensified when President Trump publicly praised FIFA’s ruling from the Oval Office on Monday, fueling concerns over his relationship with Gianni Infantino and the legitimacy of the ban suspension. With Balogun at the center of the storm, Pochettino addressed his availability ahead of the match after reports surfaced that the striker had also been hit with a substantial financial penalty, via The Mirror US.
“What I would say is, I would say I saw we were focused,” Pochettino said on Monday prior to their game against Belgium. “We knew our job is to prepare for the game in the best condition.
“Of course, to have all the players available is good news. Of course, to have the facility to have Balo again with us and being available is important for the team.”
When pressed on what Balogun brings to the USMNT, Pochettino added, “I think he has scored three goals, and I think he’s doing a fantastic job.
“But that’s why he’s brilliant for us and is important for the team. I hope that today he can show his quality,” he concluded.
The controversy has evolved into a major integrity discussion surrounding the World Cup, FIFA, its president, Infantino, and Trump. The USMNT, in the meantime, will field its top striker, with Balogun attempting to shut out the distractions.

Trump allegedly played a significant part in the appeals procedure to FIFA, communicating with Infantino and challenging the sanction. Following the final verdict, Trump commended FIFA.
“He (Balogun) didn’t do anything wrong? , and he is our best player,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office on Monday. “When they take your best player and say, ‘You can’t play,’ it’s very unfair.
“I think they made a really brilliant decision. I asked for a review. If they would not allow a top player to play I think it (the World Cup) would have had a big stain. I related that feeling.”
The Belgian soccer federation subsequently sought clarification from FIFA, but the petition was deemed “inadmissible,” establishing that Belgium couldn’t challenge the ruling and that Balogun was cleared to participate. Belgium indicated it would pursue action if Balogun appeared on Monday’s team sheet.
“Regardless of the sporting outcome of the match, (we are) deeply concerned by the way these events have unfolded and will continue, in the hours, days and months ahead, to pursue every available avenue to uphold the fundamental principles of ethics, sporting fairness and the interests of football as a whole,” a statement from Belgium read.
