Matt Damon Officially Joins 'The Gilded Age' for Season 4
There have always been plenty of familiar faces wandering around the expensive drawing rooms of The Gilded Age, but even the biggest, boldest and wealthiest families in New York were probably taken aback by two of the newest additions to high society this week. Julian Fellowes‘ lavish historical drama has spent years assembling one of TV’s best casts but with the fourth season now underway, HBO has managed to sneak in an Oscar-winning superstar and a late-night television legend.
Matt Damon has officially made a surprise appearance in The Gilded Age Season 4, joining David Letterman for an unexpected cameo in the HBO drama’s November 1 premiere. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance came about through an unusual collaboration between the production teams behind The Gilded Age and Letterman’s Netflix interview series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. Letterman had apparently wanted to appear as a background performer for years, and the idea of having Damon accompany him proved too entertaining to ignore.
Reports say that the cameo was put together quickly when producers realized that Damon, who like many in Hollywood, began his long career working as an extra in his early days and could help Letterman out with his ambition. As a result, the pair were dressed as Victorian gentlemen, with Damon sporting a top hat and elaborate facial hair while Letterman wore a bowler hat and retained his familiar post-retirement beard.
