'Matlock' Officially Won't Return in 2026

Matlock is the kind of show that makes TV executives happy in a stressful, competitive business. Although inspired by a beloved show (which could lead to blowback), the series carved out its own identity and won everyone over with its premise and strong performances by Kathy Bates, Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, and others. Matlock was a hit by multiple metrics, first earning critical acclaim, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 93% score. The legal drama was a ratings hit for CBS right off the bat, attracting millions of viewers.

But despite its solid mystery, Matlock had a problem baked into its core: the premise meant the mystery had to be solved sooner rather than later, or the whole thing would look implausible. Viewers watched for two seasons as Matty navigated the modern corporate world while trying to gain access to documents that would help her make a case against the company that was never held responsible for its role in her daughter’s death. The show did not do what other procedurals do, where they stretch the premise, solving the Wellbrexa mystery in two seasons.

Noticeably, Matlock is not on CBS’s schedule this fall, and won’t return until 2027. It seems ill-informed for a network to delay one of its most popular shows, but there is a reason for that. In an interview, series creator Jennie Snyder Urman revealed that she approached CBS and asked to slot the show into the second stretch of the season because, after solving the Wellbrexa mystery, the show had officially reset. Urman said the request to hold the Matlock Season 3 premiere for midseason gives her and the writing team ample time to craft the next storyline.

Four criminal masterminds. One of them was always going to be yours.
Here is who comes for you, why they picked you out of everyone available, and what they want from
the encounter.

Your nemesis does not want to beat you. He wants to know you
completely, and he is patient enough to wait for it. The frightening part is how good the
conversation is.

  • Lecter is the most dangerous kind of opponent: the one who finds you interesting. He
never raises his voice, because he has never needed to.
  • You keep a great deal to yourself and you are careful about what you show. That reserve
is exactly the door he would knock on.
  • The films understood something other thrillers missed. The horror is not the violence.
It is being perfectly understood by the wrong person.
  • He would be unfailingly polite about all of it. That is the worst part.

Your nemesis is not after money, territory or revenge. He is
after a demonstration, and you are the person he has chosen to prove his point on.

  • The Joker only picks opponents who believe in something. Your decency is not a defence
against him. It is the entire reason he showed up.
  • He has no plan you can predict and nothing you can take away, which removes every tool
    you would normally reach for.
  • His whole argument is that you are one bad day away from being him, and you would spend
the rest of your life proving him wrong.
  • He would call it a magic trick. You would call it the worst night of your life.

Your nemesis respects you, which sounds flattering until you work
out what it means. He chose you because nobody else was worth his time.

  • Moriarty is the original criminal mastermind, the template every later one borrows from:
a mind the equal of the hero’s, pointed the wrong way.
  • You enjoy being the cleverest person in the room. He is counting on exactly that, and he
    has already built the room.
  • This is the rare nemesis who would be genuinely disappointed if you lost badly. He needs
the game to be worth playing.
  • It ends the way these things always end. Two people, one problem, and only one way down.

Your nemesis has no personal interest in you whatsoever, and that
is precisely what makes him unsurvivable. You are not a rival. You are a stop on the way.

  • Chigurh does not negotiate, gloat or explain. He arrives, he asks one question, and the
answer was decided long before you opened your mouth.
  • You trust yourself to handle things. He is the one problem in the world that has no
interest in how capable you are.
  • No Country for Old Men rewrote the screen villain by removing the thing audiences
quietly rely on: the sense that talking might work.
  • Call it. He will wait.

The creator acknowledged fans’ disappointment but also said the delay helped her team. “Sad for audiences, but actually really good for me and the writers because I want us to plot this new mystery and make sure it’s airtight,” she said. “We had a lot of pieces going in, so we really had to create this new piece of it. I feel lucky that the network’s giving us time to get it right because I don’t want the quality to drop.” She added, “The quality is everything to me.” Matlock Season 3 is already in production, hinting that Urman and her team have their next mystery locked and loaded. She confirmed the new mystery will build on the old one, but it won’t be a continuation, hinting at something involving insurance and healthcare. Meanwhile, the show is also racking up gains elsewhere after the first season landed on Netflix a few weeks ago and became a streaming sensation.

Catch up with both seasons on Paramount+ and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
