New Mexico United is back on the road for another long road trip — an important one, too. Sacramento, California, is the destination this time for a meeting with Republic FC.
Here are some things to note:
Free kicks
- BREAKING ON A GOOD NOTE: United wouldn’t mind heading into the USL Championship’s mandatory mental health intermission with some momentum.
New Mexico is unbeaten over its last four matches between regular-season and USL Cup competitions and in seven of its last nine. Saturday, however, will mark the club’s last contest for 11 days — United hosts Liga MX side Atlante FC for an international friendly on July 1 — and last league matchup for two weeks — a home matchup against Oakland Roots SC on July 4.
That’s rather important considering how jumbled the 12-team Western Conference standings are at the moment. New Mexico is tied with Las Vegas Lights FC and Lexington SC with 15 points, but currently holds the eighth spot ahead of the other two in the table.
Four other clubs — Oakland (18 points), Phoenix Rising FC (16), El Paso Locomotive FC (16) and Sacramento (16) — can either be matched or passed potentially with a win.
- AN APPLE A DAY? As the cliché goes, it does keep the doctor away.
United has managed to stay relatively healthy over the last month or so, but there are a few knicks and bruises the break should help.
Forward/defender Jake LaCava has been dealing with a toe fracture. Midfielder Valentin Noël has had a hamstring strain. Forward Niall Reid-Stephen is working through an MCL injury suffered last week against Orange County SC. Each is “day-to-day,” per manager Dennis Sanchez.
There’s also defender Will Seymore, who hasn’t been featured since United’s 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay Rowdies on May 21, a four-match stretch.
- SEEKING THAT GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY: Well, United is going to California. And the state’s capital city hasn’t been very welcoming to the New Mexico club.
United hasn’t won at Republic FC since a 2-1 victory on July 24, 2019, its first road match against the California club. Since then, New Mexico is 0-5-2 in Sacramento, which included being knocked out of the playoffs in 2019, 2022 and ’23.
United’s two draws — both scores were 0-0 — took place in ’22 and ’23.
Overall, Republic FC has outscored New Mexico 12-4 in California.
United is 2-3 when hosting Sacramento.
- REELING IN THE YEARS: Republic FC recently rewarded one of its own.
Defender Michel Benitez received a multi-year contract extension last week from the club. Full terms were not disclosed.
Benitez has played in all 57 of Sacramento’s contests since joining Republic FC in 2025 after an eight-year stint in Mexico. The defender has contributed 12 total goals, which include a club-high three this season.
Defensively, Benitez leads Sacramento in interceptions (20), tackles (21), blocks (7) and duels won (55).
Key matchup
United forward Justin Rennicks vs. Republic FC keeper Daniel Vitiello
With Reid-Stephen dealing with a knee issue, Rennicks could be the one helping to fill that void. Reid-Stephen paces New Mexico with three regular-season goals. Rennicks has one, but came close in last week’s 1-1 draw with Orange County. United is currently 24th out of 25 clubs in goals scored with 12 regular-season scores. Vitiello, meanwhile, has conceded 11 goals on 40 chances. He’s also logged four clean sheets.

United defender Kipp Keller
The cornrows were back during the week after taking them out for the draw with Orange County. Keller has made an impact since returning to the starting lineup defensively, but he’s also contributed offensively. He’s scored two of United’s last six goals — in the 1-0 win over Charleston Battery on May 23 and against Orange County.

1,089: The distance in miles between United’s training facility and Heart Health Park. It’s one of five 1,000-mile trips left of New Mexico’s schedule.
0: United has no other scheduled matches that start this late. The club has an 8 p.m. start time at Monterey Bay FC on Aug. 8 and kicks off at 8:30 p.m. at Las Vegas on Sept. 5.
1: Republic FC’s placement in reported average attendance in the USL Championship this season. Sacramento is averaging 9,608 fans. United is fourth with 8,514.
