Manuel Neuer has offered an insight into his relationship with Jonas Urbig, making it clear that there is no tension between Bayern Munich’s experienced No. 1 and his younger goalkeeping teammate.
With Urbig widely viewed as one of the potential successors to Neuer, there has naturally been plenty of attention on their relationship. However, Neuer insists that the two have a strong connection and are constantly pushing each other to improve.
Neuer emphasized that the relationship is built on mutual respect, competition and a shared desire to improve, while also stressing that the entire Bayern Munich goalkeeping group remains closely connected.
“We have a very open relationship. We work with passion in our jobs and try to push each other. We also share the same interests. Jonas and I are often written about, but basically, we’re all the same in the goalkeeping team. We get along well. We work very hard, also with Sven Ulreich and with the young goalkeepers who help us out, and also with the goalkeeping coaches. We all have a very good relationship, we simply enjoy training and matches, and always try to get the best out of the team,” Neuer told Sky Germany’s Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That relationship could be extremely valuable for Urbig.
The 22-year-old is learning from one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, while Neuer is also benefiting from competition within Bayern Munich’s goalkeeping group.
Rather than viewing Urbig as a threat, Neuer appears to see him as a teammate he can help develop.
For Bayern Munich, that can only be a positive.
