Manchester United are currently focusing their efforts on West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes and talks through his agent Jorge Mendes are advancing, according to The Athletic. Man United manager Michael Carrick wants two players in the middle of the park at the Old Trafford club, and the ‘unbelievably excellent’ 21-year-old Portuguese has been a top target for weeks. Agreeing personal terms with Fernandes is not anticipated to prove an issue for the Red Devils in a much-needed boost.
The West Ham star is also on the radar of the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal, but it appears Man United are currently favourites due to their relationship with Mendes. The super agent has an excellent working relationship with the Red Devils, and Fernandes could be on his way to the Theatre of Dreams. He has emerged as one of Man United’s priority targets and interest is expected to be formalised with an opening bid. However, the club are not prepared to meet West Ham’s demands of £80 million.
They have other targets on their radar and have also explored the parameters of a deal for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. He could be available for £60m this summer, which is a more appealing fee to the Red Devils.
