Man arrested in UK for selling £500,000 fake wines

A 34-year-old man is expected to face prosecution in the United Kingdom for allegedly supplying dozens of suspected counterfeit wine bottles.

The suspect, who was apprehended on suspicion of fraud by false representation, has been granted bail as authorities continue their investigation.

He was arrested at an address in Essex in an operation conducted by officers from the Food Standards Agency, FSA, and National Food Crime Unit, NFCU, supported by the Metropolitan Police Service.

The agency revealed that 55 bottles of fake wine were sold to an unsuspecting victim for almost £10,000 per bottle. The total cost exceeded £500,000.

“There is no excuse for this type of food crime,” said Simon Ashwin, Senior Investigator at the Food Standards Agency’s NFCU.

Ashwin said food fraud is an offence that can cause significant financial and reputational harm to legitimate businesses that fall victim to scammers.

The official, however, advised businesses to check their suppliers and conduct due diligence to help confirm that the products they purchase are legitimate.

The FSA and NFCU work with police and partners to prevent food crime and track down fraudsters, ensuring that businesses and consumers are protected.
