Mahrez leaves Al-Ahli after announcing Algeria retirement

Riyad Mahrez has left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, ending a successful three-year stint with the club and just a day after announcing his retirement from international football. 

Mahrez, who moved to Saudi Arabia in 2023 from Manchester City, won the AFC Champions League and Saudi Super Cup during his time in the Middle East. 

The 35-year-old made 122 appearances for Al-Ahli in all competitions, scoring 37 goals as well as providing 46 assists.

Since making his league debut for the club, only Ivan Toney (66) has managed to register more goal involvements than Mahrez’s 54 (23 goals, 31 assists) for Al-Ahli. 

He featured 27 times in the Saudi Pro League last season as Al-Ahli finished third and five points behind champions Al-Nassr. He ended the campaign with team-high totals for chances created (76) and assists (eight). 

“Three unforgettable years. Countless magical moments. A legacy that will forever live in the hearts of every Al Ahli fan,” the club said in a statement announced on Saturday.

Mahrez’s decision comes shortly after confirming he had played his last game for Algeria following their exit at the World Cup to Switzerland in the last 32. 

At the age of 35 years and 131 days, he became the second-oldest African player to start a World Cup knockout-stage match, after Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye (36 years, 278 days) against Belgium one day earlier.

But he was unable to inspire his team to victory, finishing his international career with 119 caps and 40 goals, both the joint-second most for the country on their all-time list.
