Sophie Cunningham’s comments on how to “protect women’s sports” caused quite the stir this week. In a feature published by ESPN, the Indiana Fever reserve guard broached trans inclusion in sports.

“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” she said. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Cunningham then went on to describe her political leanings as neutral.

“I’m very much in the middle,” she said. “I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”

However she may feel she aligns, her takes have certainly resonated with right-wingers. United States President Donald Trump’s Department of Education supported her comments, and now a member of Congress is thanking her personally.

“I want to thank Sophie Cunningham for speaking out and make it clear that I could not agree more,” South Carolina Senator Darlline Graham said in a statement, per Fox.

“What she said took a lot of guts. It’s sad but true that in today’s world, and particularly on this issue, common sense is not common.”

“You guys fall for it every single time.”

People who want to protect transgender children and other vulnerable communities had no problem extending their outrage over Cunningham’s comments to Graham.

“A complete over exaggerated issue pushed to scare stupid Fox viewers and MAGA bigots,” one person posted on X.

“Politicians will literally spend 100% of their time on culture war distraction tactics instead of fixing real state problems, and you guys fall for it every single time,” someone else added.

“Whatever happened to shut up and dribble? That must only apply to black players,” another person wrote.

Not everyone agrees

Shockingly, Cunningham’s childhood friend and podcast cohost West Wilson does not agree with her, and even called out politicians such as Graham in a recent video he posted to TikTok.

“Okay, transgender athletes in American sports is such a borderline nonexistent issue that right-wingers have convinced a massive portion of people in our country that it— that these people are like a threat to sports in America when mathematically that’s not the case at all,” he said.

“And by continuing to platform this,  fcking politicians, athletes, journalists, news outlets, you’re only isolating transgender people even more by making them seem like this giant group of people is a threat to society, a threat to sports, when that’s just not proportionately the truth in any capacity. There is like 10 transgender athletes in all of the NCAA, and so I think there are unique questions that can be handled on an individual basis, but to allow this to take our attention away from like housing and healthcare and wars and all the other actual harmful sht in our country is dumb.”

Hopefully, more people join Wilson in defending vulnerable people and focusing on the issues that are a real threat to all the things that make America great.
